Since the atmosphere is an extremely and differentially influential medium for radiated electromagnetic energy, common-even lower-order qualitative-thermographic praxis must account for its effects.

The effects of atmospheric media on thermography will be dependent upon its temperature, density, movement, particulates, etc. For these reasons the practitioner will find that there are several adjustable parameters on all but the most basic thermographic cameras including atmospheric distance, relative humidity, and temperature.

Atmospheric opacity isn’t necessarily detrimental to thermography. The opacity of methane (CH4) at approximately 3.2µ produces a usable contrast between a normal atmosphere and a methane concentration, useful in locating methane leaks by cameras sensitive in that spectral region.

This video (2:36) explores some specifics of electromagnetic energy relative to thermography within the common atmospheric medium.
