Pixel is a portmanteau of “picture element” and is generally understood to refer to the granular spatial component of a common electromagnetic sensor. While the horizontal (x-axis, or abcissa) and vertical (y-axis, or ordinate) dimension of a pixel-a discrete sensor site-may measure in the single digit microns (millionths of a meter) on the sensor, it expands linearly in the absence of distortion into the field; the further from the camera, the larger the discrete area the unitary sensor site represents.

This video (4:42) explores the concept of the Instantaneous Measurement Field of View (IMFOV) in thermography.
