Here are some of the more interesting (to my way of thinking) images from this winter.
This January ground-based image of construction of the SH 16 Bridge over the Boise River north of Meridian is “black & white” to minimize the interference of the tree details with the geometries of the cranes. We put together a several-minute video of the cranes operating (placing beams) in January. Professional video is becoming popular for complex craning operations.
The beams were precast and required special trucks to transport them. A tricky portion of the transport was backing the beams along the winding access road to a point where the large (not terribly mobile, but precariously close to sensitive wetlands) cranes could access them. The operation was slow-we sped the video up to 6 times normal speed to demonstrate the operation.
By March the conditions on the ground were much friendlier for heavy equipment. This image shows construction of the SH 16 bridge over the Phyllis Canal north of Chinden Rd.
Another interesting and exciting project is the continue progress of the new Zion’s Bank Building in downtown Boise, Idaho. This will be Idaho’s tallest building (315′), besting the new Air Traffic Control Tower at Gowen Field by just a few feet.
The JUMP (Jack’s Urban Meeting Place) construction progress is also enjoying remarkable progress and community “buzz.”
Our work isn’t all objective: in this case we arrived in Lewiston, Idaho as the sun rose above the horizon (at our altitude, about 1000′ above the ground) so I asked my pilot to circle around the Potlatch plume looking for an interesting view. I’m more sensitized to “aesthetic” images than I ever have been, particularly when flying over the Palouse (Lewiston-Pullman-Moscow) at sunrise. Of course, the rest of the day was spent “shooting” construction and for litigation…
