These images were acquired under relatively “balanced” lighting conditions, meaning that direct sunlight was mitigated by a high, even cloud layer.
Forensic aerial photography and aerial videography are served well by these types of conditions: shadows are “the enemy” and little more than obscurative unless they are required for certain shadow modeling, photogrammetric, or other interpretive exercises. Balanced conditions allow for consistent exposure values when imaging various directions, particularly when the sun is low in the sky-such as on early or late flights. These images were developed for interactive forensic animations we’re producing, and they’ll be rotated, warped, and combined with other angles of the same subjects: inconsistencies in color are typically considered objectionable in such applications.
