The Professional Aerial Photographers Assocation, International, Haze Tutorial
Feb 13th, 2010 by Leo A. Geis
OK, I’m about a full year late on this project…and I have no excuses.
Here’s a tutorial on resolving haze in aerial photography. It presumes that you have a fundamental knowledge of Adobe Camera RAW version 5.x. This is not a “beginner’s” tutorial, nor is it particularly advanced, but it does touch on some matters that are important not only in resolving the compromised contrast and saturation caused by haze, but also in general Color Science. For example, knowing why we don’t want to “Cavitate the Histogram” is important in a wide variety of RGB Curve exercises.
The last two minutes of the video (following the actual tutorial) are a “speed render” of my preparation of the image without holding back any of the tools in Camera RAW-I use HSL, Split Toning, Detail Masking, and some of the other more esoteric controls in the application. One of the cardinal points in the tutorial is that you need to moderate your expectations of what can be accomplished in instances of severe haze.
