Backcountry Landing Strips in Idaho
Aug 24th, 2009 by Leo A. Geis
We spent much of Sunday, 8/23/09 with some friends from the Idaho Aviation Foundation photographing a few of Idaho’s wonderful (and very challenging) Backcountry Landing Strips.
Ultra-Pilot Joe Corlett and IAF Executive Director Bob Martin made the trip possible with their extensive knowledge of Idaho’s expansive wilderness areas, and Joe’s exquisite 1958 Cessna 182 (with VG’s, polished skin, and custom panel) made the trip a treat more than a task.
This following is a graphic of our GPS flight track off of my portable Garmin-it shows the 4+06 flight plan view:
The following is a graphic of our GPS altitude profile showing the climbs necessary to photograph some of these strips (consider that we were well beneath the heights of the various mountains surrounding these canyons and meadows):
…and of course, the product of our flight-this slide show will advance automatically but you do have the ability to manually advance or retreat through groups of all 22 images using the “Plus” and “Minus” icons in the toolbar along the bottom. The “Fast-Forward” and “Reverse” icons can be used to speed to either end of the numerical listing, and the “Pause” icon…well…ahem.
Prints of these images will be made available to benefit the IAF shortly-we’ve still got a boatload of airfields to shoot.
