A Sunset Aerial Photograph of Boise State University, 8/30/08
Sep 1st, 2008 by Leo A. Geis
Here’s an image I have planned for two years-that’s my new record for scouting a shoot, by the way. We had to have the stadium lit, a good sunset in the distance, a good atmosphere over the game venue-conditions which do not occur simultaneously with any regularity.
It took a bit of Photoshop to coax some of the color in the anvil-shaped cloud out. I ended up applying a Gradient Map in a rather drastic Blending Mode, the reducing the opacity of that layer to get the final result, muted as it is (it looked far too synthetic with much saturation-in reality, the clouds were completely shadowed/gray). I also Dodged in a bit of the sun’s ray penetrating the crack in the cloud, then added another Layer with some color in Color Burn (Blending Mode) to put some hue back into the sun (which had clipped out a bit).
If you know much about aviation meteorology you’ll also notice a squall line along the horizon. Sure enough, it arrived far too quickly and we enjoyed 15-20 knot headwinds on our way back to Nampa.
