Aerial Photography in Sun Valley, Hailey, Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, Pocatello, and Twin Falls, Idaho 6/08
Jun 28th, 2008 by Leo Geis
I flew some 13 hours last week, shooting over 2,000 aerial photographs. Except for the ~1000 in the local Treasure Valley (Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Nampa and Caldwell), most were in Blaine County (Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue).
That’s a lot of homework, preparing those images. On top of that I was up early this morning on an architectural shoot in downtown Boise. I’m very tired and intimidated by the workload.
Here are a few images from a 6 hour flight on Friday, 6/27/08:
The new Sun Valley Lodge Amphitheatre under construction.
Construction of the new Twin Falls Canyon View High School.
Incidentally, some folks don’t like the black frame & shadowed border shown in the images above, so let’s contrast that with a simpler stroke frame and drop shadow on the following images.

St. Luke’s/Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls. The new facility is under construction a few miles to the north.
The weather was absolutely perfect-not too hot (we were as high as 10,500 feet above sea level anyway) and not very bumpy at all. This aerial photograph (viewing west) of the context of the Idaho Falls Country Club shows the skies we had to deal with:
The large butte on the horizon center is Great Southern Butte (43°23′57.71″N, 113° 1′14.26″W) (pops)-it is 54.64 miles from the camera’s position.
To prove that’s the way it was, here’s an image taken against the sun (which mitigates contrast) viewing east-northeast from over Idaho Falls. The Tetons are visible, 71.54 miles from the camera’s position. The red arrow points to the Tetons just over the Big Hole Mountains:

Yes, it’s true that altitude does help distant viewing.
