Sniffing Out Time Lapse Fraud
Jan 6th, 2008 by Leo Geis
Time lapse is catching on. Unfortunately we’re seeing some simple PTZ and NLE framing manipulations being presented as the product of motion control.
An understanding of subtended angles (in fact, pretty much any off-axis lensing or sensor signature as well) makes it very, very easy to diagnose whether or not a time lapse series was produced with actual zooming or motion control devices versus simple NLE manipulations. Rotoscoping in an element or two won’t help much, either…the DCT can be a real tattletale, particularly out of the earlier codecs.
