Canon 14mm f2.8L II USM: Expletive Deleted!
Aug 29th, 2007 by Leo A. Geis
I’m not yet subscribing to any rumors of a supergrade line of L’s from Canon, but if this is any indication of the next round…
The new Canon 14mm f2.8L II USM.
All second-guessing, and design-vs.-performance MTF questions aside, the low frequency f8 sagital and meriodonal performance curves are drop-dead stunning for an ultra-wide. Or a wide or a normal, for that matter. I’ll hold my breath on the questions of linear distortions and vignetting, et. al., but there’s no reason to be prejudging negatively.
Incidentally, while the displacement between the curves in a set is an indicator of less desirable bokeh character, I don’t consider it to be a cardinal issue when shooting at a 114° HFOV.
